Types of rubber cord and tube and their applications
These products are widely used as rubber bumpers, fillers, and to form O-rings for use as seals. The solid round rubber cord and hollow tubes even have a protective shock-absorbing function which may be used as an alternative to fendering.
Cords and tubes of NBR (also referred to as Nitrile Rubber) are resilient to oils, greases and diluted acids. These have great properties, however their weather and ozone resistance is not as good as EPDM. Additionally, they are vulnerable to aromatic compounds, halogenated hydrocarbons, car brake fluids or strong acids. The operating temperature is restricted to 110°C.
Rubber material breakdown
The EPDM quality round cords and tubes are strongly recommended for use outside. The material promises a long life since it degrades very little from contact with UV and ozone and is very water resistant. EPDM can be used at high temperatures up to 135°C but has limited resistance to oils and fats.
The cords and tubes that are made from PCR, also referred to as Neoprene, are the best all-rounder synthetic elastomer of industrial rubbers, with a highest usage temperature of 110°C. Neoprene has a variety of uses and has some chemical resistance to many substances, including water, diluted acids, solvents, mineral oils, fats and chemicals.
The Viton round cords and tubes are made from very high-quality fluorine-containing rubber and have good resistance to several chemicals and also to concentrated acids and alkalis. Viton is commonly used at high temperatures, even up to 200°C. Viton is also referred to as FPM and FKM; it has superior properties compared to other rubbers, especially where durability and chemical resistance are concerned.
Silicone round cords and tubes have relatively low mechanical properties, especially tear resistance. This synthetic rubber is smooth, has great non-stick properties, and can withstand temperatures of over 200°C. Silicone stays malleable at low temperatures down to -80 ° C and is ozone, UV and weather resistant. Silicone has low flammability and is well suited to be used at high temperatures. Silicone compounds are available for food processing and pharmaceutical applications too.
